Our interests can be somewhat understood by way of the analogy of a table, in that each of our three primary natural history science interests can be thought of as a table leg: offering training seminars, publishing journals, and hosting a conference.
In support of these three foundational elements, the institute is seeking to add a fourth foundational element for its interests in the natural history sciences by developing a commitment to phasing in support for research efforts based out of Eagle Hill.
We first started offering in-person training seminars in the natural history sciences in 1987. Conversations among our faculty members and alumni over a number of years noted the potentials of early desktop publishing. The institute started publishing peer reviewed scientific journals in 1993. By way of our Northeastern Naturalist, the institute was well positioned to be one of the sponsors of the biennial Northeast Natural History Conference that was hosted by the New York State Museum in Albany and founded by its research director, who was one of our faculty members. In 2011, the institute was asked to adopt and host the Northeast Natural History Conference. We have been hosting it annually since then. When we lost our 2020 seminar season and conference due to the pandemic, we transitioned to offering online training seminars, which expanded our global outreach, while also enabling us to offer seminars that cannot be taught in-person.
