Gustav Janet (French, 1829–1898)

Gustav Janet was an illustrator, wood engraver, and lithographer. He worked for L'Illustration, the first illustrated newspaper in France, launched in 1843. He provided drawings to La Revue de la Mode, the London Illustrated Times (1855-1856), and the Illustrated London News (1867-1871). His lithographs were published in the 1850’s by Bertauts and Aubert, then by Lemercier.

Alfred Schrötter studied painting from 1872–1877 at the Viennese Academy of Fine Art. From 1879 she studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In 1900 he became the leader of the drawing program at the Academy in Graz, Austria. From 1907–1923 was widely active and well regarded as an exceptional teacher and influenced a generation of artists.

Thomas Davidson (British, 1842-1919)

A Guard in a Reflective Interlude

Davidson was a historical and genre painter who exhibited widely, including at the Birmingham Royal Society of Artists, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, and the Royal Institute of Art Painters.

The guard is wearing a uniform from the time of King Louis Philippe I of France, who ruled from 1830 to 1848, and who is considered by some to be the penultimate monarch of France.
