A cultural and events center on the western slope

There is a broad consensus that the institute's interests in music and fine art are an important and natural part of its overall mission, since they contribute in deeply emotional ways to the cultural setting within which the institute's natural history science primary missions play out.

A parallel campaign ... In parallel with our campaign for the natural history sciences, we are hosting a campaign on behalf of the music program with the goal of raising funds for the construcion of a cultural and events center on the western slope of Eagle Hill.

A paradigm shift by way of new buildings … We are working on plans and grant applications for new buildings at Eagle Hill.

A paradigm shift by way of restructuring the Board of Trustees … We are in the process of discussing how we can diversify the Board of the institute to expand the institute's ability to refine its missions and to take on new missions.

We are asking members of the extended Eagle Hill family to consider the catalytically-strategic merits of expanding the campus of Eagle Hill by way of the following projects. The understanding is that these projects will lead to new program developments.

Location … We have committed to the expansion of the campus on the western slope of Eagle Hill. Those who have been to the western overlook, which we call “Lover’s Leap”, know how spectacular the views at sunset are overlooking Gouldsboro Bay, with Cadillac Mountain and Schoodic Head in the background. The overlook is designated as forever wild. The buildings will be located North of it, but will offer a reasonably comparable view.

Costs … Construction costs nowadays for all building projects are considerable, but are more reasonably manageable on a collaborative basis.

Design charrettes … We will be hosting charrettes to seek design suggestions and evaluate design proposals from competing architects.

The stage has thus been set for the construction of a cultural and events center on the western slope of Eagle Hill, with the idea that it will have a more elegant and expanded performance space that will allow us to consider hosting more diverse programming, such as chamber orchestra and chamber opera performances with a modest number of musicians and singers. To test the potentials of the latter and to show proof-of-concept, we are hosting our first program this coming Spring featuring a selection of arias.
